Monetizing Smart Farming with Adobe Commerce
BASF Digital Farming turned its FIELD MANAGER platform XARVIO into a scalable, global commerce engine—powered by Adobe Commerce and Comwrap Reply.
The Challenge
Enable global monetization of xarvio FIELD MANAGER with a flexible, headless commerce solution supporting localized payments, subscriptions, and entitlements.
The Scenario
The Solution
Headless Commerce for Precision Agriculture
Comwrap Reply designed and implemented a fully headless, globally scalable commerce solution built on Adobe Commerce—engineered specifically for the monetization of digital agriculture services. The user experience begins with an intuitive geospatial interface: farmers select their fields via satellite map, and the system dynamically calculates subscription fees based on area size (hectares or acres). Users can then purchase crop-specific applications—such as decision support tools for corn or wheat—as one-time transactions.
Additionally, real-time precision services such as crop spraying, irrigation, or harvesting can be triggered on-demand through pay-as-you-go functionality. These services are fulfilled either by drones or local service partners in the region.
To enable global rollout from day one, we built a flexible entitlement management layer that handles localized business logic without relying on a traditional contract platform. This includes automated service entitlements per user, per field, per purchase; collective invoicing logic for end-of-month billing; revenue deferral capabilities for recurring products; and full support for multiple currencies and tax jurisdictions. Behind the scenes, payment providers were integrated to handle local preferences and compliance, including invoice-based and digital wallet methods. The system supports real-time validation of service eligibility based on field attributes, geography, and service provider availability.
The platform’s architecture was designed to be composable, future-ready, and business-user-friendly—allowing the BASF Digital Farming team to continuously add new services, pricing models, and market rules without replatforming. With Adobe Commerce at the core and Comwrap Reply’s headless framework on top, xarvio FIELD MANAGER now monetizes field-level intelligence at global scale—with full operational control and zero compromise on user experience.
How we did it
Using Adobe Commerce as the backbone, we delivered a headless monetization platform tailored to the complexities of digital agriculture. The user journey begins with selecting fields via satellite map. Pricing is calculated automatically based on size and selected crops. Services like automated irrigation alerts or spraying are offered on a pay-as-you-go basis.
We integrated global payment providers and implemented custom entitlement rules to manage access and usage—down to the hectare. Since no contract system was in place, we developed a lightweight entitlement and invoicing logic that handles subscriptions, one-time purchases, and monthly summaries in local currency.
Revenue deferrals and multi-country tax logic were embedded to support global scale. The system is now live across EMEA, the Americas, and APAC—with built-in flexibility to adapt to new farming services and business models.
The Results
The MVP was live in just 8 weeks, and the impact was immediate: 600% year-on-year growth over two years. With localized commerce now live in 25+ countries, xarvio FIELD MANAGER can monetize its intelligence in real time—converting insights into revenue.
Farmers benefit from transparency, flexibility, and control. BASF Digital Farming now runs a composable monetization engine that grows with their product, service catalog, and user base—at scale.
